On September 14, 2023, the Hangberg Sports and Recreation Centre in Hangberg will host the Urban Waste Management (UWM) Directorate’s Basket of Waste Services Roadshow. This event provides an exceptional opportunity for the community to learn about waste management and interact with representatives from the City’s UWM Directorate.
Residents of Hangberg and surrounding areas are invited to attend the event and participate in the activities. The UWM Directorate will distribute home composting containers to qualifying residents of single residential houses, making it even more appealing to environmentally conscious citizens.
The roadshow aims to assemble various waste management services, including cleansing services, refuse collection services, waste minimisation, events and partnerships, policy and strategy, by-law enforcement, and revenue management. These services aim to ensure area tidiness, remove illegal dumping, provide refuse collection in informal settlements, and increase waste minimisation, among others.
The distribution of 200 home composting containers to qualifying residents of single residential houses, at no cost, adds another layer of environmental responsibility to this event. Home composting containers play a vital role in reducing organic waste in landfills, extending the available landfill airspace and mitigating the global warming potential of landfills.
Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, emphasizes the importance of the Basket of Waste Services Roadshow. The event’s objective is to raise awareness about proper waste disposal and reduce illegal dumping, which tarnishes the beauty of communities. Twigg asserts that residents are crucial players in this mission, and the UWM Directorate is eager to hear thoughts and suggestions from the community on using resources more effectively in their areas. The directorate is committed to considering all ideas and advice received during the roadshow.
Hangberg’s Basket of Waste Services Roadshow marks a significant stride towards a cleaner and more sustainable neighborhood. The event promises to be a turning point in waste management and environmental awareness for residents, setting the stage for a greener future in the community.
