Vereeniging Intermodal Facility Phase 1 Inauguration

On August 11, 2023, Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, handed over the first phase of the Vereeniging Intermodal facility to the Sedibeng District Municipality residents. The inauguration of the intermodal facility marks a significant step towards transforming Vereeniging into an Economic Development Hub. This initiative also demonstrates the government’s commitment to accelerating road infrastructure delivery across Gauteng.

Collaborative Effort

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), Sedibeng District Municipality, Emfuleni Local Municipality, and the Gauteng Department of Transport and Logistics worked collaboratively to upgrade the intermodal facility. The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) acted as the implementing agent, ensuring the smooth execution of the project.

Phase 1 Achievements

Phase 1 of the project began in December 2022, with an investment of R30 million. It successfully refurbished the existing taxi rank and expanded it to include new hawker stalls, loading shelters, and modern ablution facilities. The renovation is expected to enhance the lives of township residents by supporting local businesses and the informal trading industry in Vereeniging.

Importance of the Facility

During the handover ceremony, MEC Diale-Tlabela emphasized the significance of the intermodal facility in Vereeniging’s transformation into an economic hub. She reiterated the government’s dedication to providing transport infrastructure projects that promote economic growth and job opportunities for the province’s citizens. The MEC also urged the community and the taxi industry to take good care of the facility and avoid vandalism.

Expansion Plan

The intermodal facility’s expansion plan is aimed at modernizing the facility to incorporate retail space, long-distance buses, and a train station. This integration will advance the government’s priority of improving the standard of living in townships, stimulating economic growth and recovery, and providing a safe, accessible, and convenient public transport system for all users.

PotholeFixGP App

The Department has launched the “PotholeFixGP” app, designed to engage with motorists and road users. This app allows road users to report road infrastructure conditions, making them the Department’s eyes and ears in ensuring a safe and pleasant driving experience. The app is available for download on the Google Play Store.

The Vereeniging Intermodal facility is a testament to the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for South African citizens. By focusing on promoting economic growth, creating job opportunities, and providing accessible and efficient public transport, the facility is poised to become a vital part of the community’s success and prosperity.
