Warning: Job Scams in Cape Town

Cape Town, a bustling metropolis filled with opportunities has recently become a target for fraudsters who prey on residents seeking employment. The City of Cape Town has issued a warning to all its residents to be cautious and vigilant for job scams that require payment. These unscrupulous individuals take advantage of job seekers’ hopes and dreams, leaving them in financial despair.

Genuine Job Opportunities

The Corporate Services Directorate of the City of Cape Town emphasizes that it is free to apply for job opportunities, and all legitimate training and employment opportunities are advertised exclusively through official city channels. Alderman Theresa Uys, the Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, empathizes with the victims of these scams and urges residents to rely only on the channels mentioned in the job advertisements when applying for opportunities. All job posts and training programs are advertised in writing, and no verbal offers should be accepted.

Recruitment Process

To guide residents in their job search, the City’s Human Resources Department has provided a clear recruitment process:

  1. Job advertisements are placed internally and/or externally, depending on the nature of the vacancy. External applicants can find these adverts in newspapers, on the City’s website under the careers section, and on career pages such as LinkedIn.
  2. Internal adverts are shared electronically through the SAP portal and the careers page. Additionally, they are displayed on designated notice boards at City facilities.
  3. Depending on the position’s level, applicants may be required to submit their job applications online via the City’s SAP portal or send them to a relevant vacancies email address.
  4. Opportunities in Training and Development programs, such as Work Integrated Learning (WIL), Skills Development, the Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG), and the Graduate Internship Programs (GIP), can be accessed by signing into https://jobjack.co.za. Upon registering on the site, interested individuals can apply for these programs.

Stay Vigilant and Report Scams

The City of Cape Town urges its residents to report any suspicious incidents to the South African Police Services. Taking action against these criminals will not only protect the unsuspecting job seekers but also uphold the integrity of the city’s genuine employment opportunities.

Pursue Legitimate Opportunities

As Cape Town continues to grow and thrive, it is essential for its residents to stay informed and cautious in their quest for employment. While encountering deceitful practices can be disheartening, it is crucial to remember that the city offers many legitimate job and training opportunities. By following the guidelines provided by the City’s Human Resources Department and exercising caution, job seekers can avoid scams and pursue their career aspirations in the beautiful Mother City.
