Water Supply Maintenance: A Comprehensive Guide for City Residents

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has scheduled a series of maintenance activities for their water supply infrastructure from 7 to 14 June. The planned works include pipe and valve installations, repairs, replacements, and pressure management installations and operations.

Maintenance Work: Pipes and Valves

Maintenance work will be conducted in several areas, including Scottsville, Baviaanskloof, and Penzance Estate, among others, resulting in temporary disruptions to water supply. The main water supply to these areas will be shut off for maintenance purposes.

In Lwandle in Strand, the installation of a water meter on the main pipeline will cause a water supply disruption. Lastly, Bellville CBD, Triangle Farm, and other areas require replacement of faulty control valves.

Zero-Pressure Tests and Conditional Assessments

Mowbray, Salt River, and Woodstock will undergo zero-pressure tests and conditional assessments on specific dates. These tests are part of the installation process for pressure management technology. During these periods, some residents may experience low water pressure or temporary water supply disruptions.

Preparing for Water Supply Disruptions

Residents are advised to store enough water in clean, sealed containers for use during the disruption periods. Moreover, it is wise to keep taps closed to prevent water loss or damage when the supply is restored.

What to Expect After Restoration

Residents may notice discolored or milky-looking water following the completion of maintenance work due to trapped air in the pipes. This should clear up if left to stand in a glass.

Stay Informed

For updates on maintenance work and the location of water tankers, residents are encouraged to follow the City of Cape Town’s Twitter account (@CityofCTAlerts). The City regrets any inconvenience caused and urges residents to stay informed and prepared.
