Western Cape Implements Groundbreaking HIV Prevention Initiative

The Western Cape Provincial Council on AIDS on TB, led by Premier Alan Winde and Civil Society Chairperson Professor Harry Hausler, will introduce the Undetectable Equals Untransmittable (U=U) campaign on August 1, 2023. This innovative multisectoral collaboration focuses on empowering people living with HIV (PLHIV) and increasing antiretroviral (ART) coverage.

PLHIV at the Heart of HIV Prevention

The U=U campaign’s purpose is to enhance ART coverage in the Western Cape and encourage ongoing ART care. It is a response to the alarming number of PLHIV in the province who are not currently receiving ART. The initiative integrates the voices of PLHIV, civil society sectors, and healthcare professionals to create understanding, support, and accessible care.

Launching with the Wellness Hub

The campaign launch coincides with the opening of the second Wellness Hub at Mitchells Plain Community Health Centre. The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness operates the facility and provides accessible, comprehensive healthcare services to underserved residents. The Wellness Hub emphasizes disease prevention and health promotion and strives to serve the entire community.

Community Walkabout and Launch Event

The U=U campaign launch event on August 1st will feature a community walkabout led by Premier Alan Winde and MEC Nomafrench Mbombo, followed by the opening of the Wellness Hub and the official launch of the U=U initiative. Members of the media are invited to attend and take photographs and conduct interviews.

Empowering PLHIV for Lasting Change

The U=U campaign prioritizes the needs of PLHIV and promotes accessible healthcare services. By empowering those affected by HIV to become active participants in prevention efforts, the campaign has the potential to create lasting change in the province. The Christ the Redeemer Church in Mitchells Plain will host the event, symbolizing the importance of community involvement and support.

Transforming HIV Prevention in the Western Cape

The U=U campaign marks a significant milestone in the fight against HIV in the Western Cape. By providing accessible healthcare services and prioritizing PLHIV needs, this groundbreaking initiative has the potential to change the way HIV is understood and managed in the province. Through collaboration, innovation, and commitment, the U=U campaign is poised to make a lasting impact.

The Western Cape’s U=U campaign emphasizes the importance of collective action and empathy in HIV prevention. It brings together various sectors of society to create an effective, inclusive approach that addresses the urgent need for increased ART coverage and support for PLHIV. With its innovative approach and strong community support, the U=U campaign is set to destigmatize HIV and provide accessible, comprehensive care for all.
