The Western Cape Government (WCG) has taken a significant step towards embracing a technology-driven future by officially opening Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) first international Skills Centre in Cape Town. As a part of the AWS Africa (Cape Town) Region, this investment aims to contribute an estimated R80 billion to South Africa’s gross domestic product from 2018 to 2029.
The establishment of the AWS Skills Centre is a result of the company’s substantial investment of R15.6 billion between 2018 and 2022. The AWS Skills Centre is designed to provide accessible cloud skills training to anyone interested in pursuing a career in the field. It offers free foundational cloud training and is open to all.
The grand opening was attended by esteemed officials like Premier Alan Winde, Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities Mireille Wenger, and other national government representatives. The centre’s launch carries special significance as it is the first of its kind outside the United States.
Premier Alan Winde emphasized the significance of this investment, stating that it would not only benefit the people of South Africa but also contribute to the nation’s global economic stature. Minister Wenger further highlighted the WCG’s focus on economic growth and job creation through the private sector, as outlined in their recently adopted economic action plan, “Growth For Jobs.”
The AWS Skills Centre offers an interactive environment for people to explore the impact of cloud computing technology on various aspects of life. It boasts immersive exhibits showcasing real-world cloud applications, live instructor-led training, and resources for earning an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification.
Premier Winde acknowledged the centre’s launch as a crucial step in implementing “Growth For Jobs,” an ambitious plan to scale up economic growth and job creation dramatically. According to Winde, continuous skills development and investment from private sector partners like AWS are vital for maintaining this momentum.
In conclusion, the AWS Skills Centre’s initiation in Cape Town marks a new chapter in South Africa’s shift towards a technology-driven future. It stands as a testament to the fruitful partnership between the government and the private sector in offering accessible education and opportunities to the nation’s residents. The AWS Skills Centre serves as a beacon of hope for future generations to come.
