The Department of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) together with Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) are partnering to host an outreach programme at the Cape Town Harbour in the Western Cape. The primary objective of the programme is to celebrate Women’s Month while highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment.
The outreach programme is scheduled to take place on August 8, leading to Women’s Day, and will focus on women in logistics to promote the theme of “Accelerating Socio-Economic Opportunities for Women’s Empowerment.” The theme aims to showcase the opportunities available to women in various sectors of the economy.
The Minister, accompanied by Advocate Phyllis Difeto, TNPA Managing Executive in the Western Region, and the Chairperson of Women in the Maritime Sector in Eastern and Southern Africa (WOMESA), will tour the Port of Cape Town as part of the ongoing efforts to transform the maritime sector.
Maritime transport plays a significant role in the oceans economy, and the transformation of the sector requires the participation of women. The outreach programme at the Cape Town Harbour will highlight this and promote discussions around the challenges faced by women in logistics and the maritime industry.
The event aims to create a supportive network for women working in logistics and provide a platform for dialogue between key players and stakeholders in the industry. The outreach programme will foster connections and initiate constructive discussions, paving the way for future collaborations.
The event will be open to the media, but attendees must bring their ID or press card for access.
Through this outreach programme, DWYPD and TNPA are making strides towards fostering a more inclusive and diverse industry landscape, highlighting the untapped potential of women in the maritime sector. The Women’s Month celebration at Cape Town Harbour will serve as a platform for dialogue, networking, and collaboration to contribute to the sustainable growth and development of the maritime sector in South Africa.
