Account of Incident

According to Nicolette Whitehead, NSRI Strandfontein Station Commander, four male friends from Mandalay were swimming together. After leaving the water, three of the men noticed that their friend was missing. After searching, they saw their companion “floating in the water appearing to be lifeless.” Despite their efforts to reach him in the breaking surf line, they were unable to do so. They then sought help from the public to raise the alarm.

Extensive Search Operation

Upon arrival at the scene, the NSRI conducted an extensive search for the missing man. Whitehead stated, “Despite an extensive air, sea, and shoreline search, there remains no sign of the missing man. Police divers attended the scene and are continuing an ongoing search operation.”

Missing Persons Case

Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg stated that Mitchells Plain police had opened a missing persons case. The search was suspended on Saturday night and is set to resume on Sunday. The NSRI has expressed its sympathy for the family and friends of the missing man during this difficult time.

Importance of Collaboration and Communication

The incident serves as a reminder of the unforeseen dangers that can arise during otherwise joyful outings with friends and family. The quick response of several organizations and agencies in conducting the search operation highlights the importance of collaboration and communication in addressing such emergencies.
