This much-loved culinary event celebrates the Karoo region’s rich and diverse food culture, where local chefs and home cooks use fresh, seasonal ingredients to create mouth-watering dishes that reflect the area’s history and traditions.

A New Competition to Mark the Milestone

To mark the festival’s 10th anniversary, a new competition has been added to the lineup, the Karoo Potjie Master competition. This exciting competition aims to showcase the best of this South African favorite dish and prove that potluck has no place in preparing this culinary delight. The organizers have put together a range of categories, including the Potjie Champion Dish, Most Innovative Potjie, Bravest Potjie, Best Starch Side Dish, Best Dressed Station, and Best Dressed Team, to test the skills of aspiring Potjie Masters.

Convened by renowned food editor and journalist Tony Jackman, the competition promises to set tongues wagging and taste buds tingling. Teams will be provided with meat and fresh vegetables from SPAR Cradock and SUPERSPAR Tams, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the CPS solar panel project. The entry fee of R500 is a small price for the opportunity to showcase culinary skills and be part of this prestigious event.

A Festival of Food, Fun, and Family

The Karoo Food Festival offers much more than just the Potjie Master competition. The festival is a celebration of the Karoo and its rich cultural heritage, and it promises to be a feast for the senses. Visitors will be treated to an array of delectable food, cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts, live music, and a range of family activities.

On Friday, the Big Ten will be celebrated with a full-on Karoo street party in Market Street, where visitors can sample wines and locally produced spirits while dancing the night away. On Saturday and Sunday, the venue will buzz with activities and entertainment for all ages. The Kids Funfair@Karoo Festival, hosted by the Trust, will provide hours of fun for the little ones. At the same time, the Amy Bell Charity Cycle, which raises funds for the Amy Bell Centre for Children, is an opportunity for cyclists to explore the beautiful Karoo landscape.

A National Treasure

The Karoo Food Festival is a national treasure, and its popularity is a testament to the passion and dedication of the organizers and local chefs. The festival celebrates the Karoo’s rich history and culture, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the region’s finest foods, wines, and spirits.

The addition of the Karoo Potjie Master competition is a testament to the festival’s commitment to innovation and excellence. The contest allows aspiring chefs to showcase their skills and challenge themselves to create new and exciting dishes.

As the festival celebrates its 10th anniversary, it is clear that it has become an essential part of South Africa’s culinary scene. The festival’s success is due in no small part to the hard work and dedication of the organizers, who have managed to create an event that is both accessible and sophisticated, and that appeals to a wide range of tastes and interests.
