During the first week of Operation Shanela, from October 2 to 8, 2023, the operation achieved exceptional results, with 569 arrests made for various crimes. Within this period, authorities conducted 44 operations, searching 66 premises, 3,185 individuals, and 1,309 vehicles. The collaboration between different forces significantly contributed to the operation’s proficiency, resulting in 82 arrests for drug-related crimes, 22 for liquor dealing, 21 for driving under the influence, 27 for firearm possession, and 20 for ammunition possession. Additionally, authorities handed over 26 undocumented individuals to the Department of Home Affairs for processing.

Operation Shanela’s Impact on Local Communities

The community-focused approach of Operation Shanela proved effective with an incident that occurred in Potchefstroom on October 6, 2023, around 2 pm. Acting on a tip-off, police officers searched a lodge and found substances believed to be mandrax (methaqualone) and crystal meth. Further investigation led to the discovery of an unlicensed firearm in the suspect’s vehicle, resulting in the arrest of a 33-year-old individual. The suspect is now awaiting trial at the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court for unlawful firearm possession and illegal substance possession.

Operation Shanela’s reach also covers more severe crimes. During the same week, authorities made 151 arrests for serious and violent crimes, including six murders, seven attempted murders, nine robberies, 107 assaults with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), and 22 cases of gender-based violence (GBV). The operation also addressed illicit mining, a prevalent issue in South Africa, with the apprehension of 18 suspects. Moreover, authorities made several seizures, including nine cell phones, ten firearms with ammunition, two vehicles, various drugs, and precious metals.

Significant Cases and Ongoing Commitment to Community Safety

A noteworthy case occurred on October 2, 2023, when police in Schweizer-Reneke received a report of a theft on the R506 (Schweizer-Reneke/Delareyville road). Upon arrival, officers encountered a security company patroller who identified four male suspects with a vehicle loaded with copper cables. The suspects were unable to account for the two bags and three rolls of cables, along with CCTV cameras found in the vehicle, valued at R90,000. Subsequently, authorities arrested all four individuals, opening a possession of suspected stolen property case. Further investigation linked the group to a recent theft in the Delareyville area. The accused, Jackson Modisapodi (29), Thabiso Mogorosi (27), Gilbert Tshilo (30), and George Moyo (42), appeared in the Delareyville Magistrates’ Court, located in Sannieshof, where they were remanded in custody. Their next court appearance is scheduled for October 23, 2023.

The achievements of Operation Shanela reflect the dedication of the police force and their diverse partners. Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lt Gen Sello Kwena, has reaffirmed law enforcement’s commitment to ensuring the region’s safety.
