Phateka Mrwebi founded the Silver Girls Netball Club in 2014 to offer a positive outlet for at-risk girls in her community and prevent them from falling victim to drug abuse and teenage pregnancy. Through netball, Mrwebi has created a supportive environment for the girls to steer clear of hazards in their surroundings and pursue a more promising future. The team has achieved considerable success in the sports field, and many of the young girls have recognized the life-changing effect it had on their lives.

Uplifting Young Girls Through Netball

In the lively township of Khayelitsha in the Western Cape, a dedicated mother is using netball as a means to fight social issues and empower young girls. Phateka Mrwebi, a 45-year-old woman from Khayelitsha, is committed to stopping girls from falling victim to drug abuse and teenage pregnancy. To make this ambitious goal a reality, she allocates a portion of her earnings as a cleaner to support a local netball team, offering a positive outlet for the at-risk girls in her community.

Mrwebi’s worries about the bleak future many young girls in Khayelitsha face grew when she believed her two teenage daughters were in danger of being lured into harmful habits. “After being away for work on Saturdays, I had a challenge of finding the girls smelling of marijuana,” she remembered. In response to this dilemma, she quickly came up with a solution: in 2014, she founded the Silver Girls Netball Club. “I introduced netball so they could be busy on weekends and have little room to do the problematic things,” she elaborated.

At first, the girls were not enthusiastic about the idea, but Mrwebi demonstrated patience and determination, and they eventually accepted it. She now personally coaches, manages, and funds the team. “Some of the girls have been with my team since they were nine years old, and I am proud of them because they have since passed their matric without falling pregnant,” Mrwebi declared with pride.

The Transformative Power of Netball

The Silver Girls Netball Club has not only offered a supportive environment for girls to steer clear of the hazards in their surroundings, but has also achieved considerable success in the sports field. The team now ranks among the top five in the Southern Zone League and has won multiple trophies, including the first prize title with their Under 11 team and the seniors division during the 2018-2019 season.

For many of the young girls, the netball team has had a life-changing effect on their lives. Shego Selome, a 20-year-old who has been with the team since its establishment, recognized the impact the team had on her life. “I have friends that I grew up with. Most of them smoke, and others are pregnant. The team helped me to stay away from those crowds in the streets,” she commented. Selome now aspires to play for the Western Cape Province and the South African national netball team, the Spar Proteas.

The story of Phateka Mrwebi and her Silver Girls Netball Club stands as an inspiring example of how an individual’s unwavering commitment and resourcefulness can have a lasting effect on the lives of young people. Through the power of sport, Mrwebi has not only bettered her own daughters’ lives, but has also impacted the lives of numerous young girls in Khayelitsha, motivating them to pursue a more promising future.
