The Charming Story of Deux Lions: A Serene Retreat in Franschhoek

1 min read
Deux Lions Franschhiek

Tucked away on La Bourgogne Farm, Deux Lions is a charming and elegant restaurant that provides a serene retreat for those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. From the moment you arrive, you are greeted by the soothing sound of a mountain stream that runs through the garden, creating a spritz of freshness on a hot summer’s day.

A Warm and Welcoming Interior

Step inside the contemporary and stylish indoor dining room, and you’ll be greeted by warm cinnamon-hued walls, comfortable chairs, and wide doors that open onto a leafy view of the mountain stream. The adjacent lounge, with its slate-tiled fireplace and comfortable armchairs, provides a cozy refuge in cooler weather.

Deux Lions Specialties that Delight the Senses

Deux Lions is the brainchild of head chef Nanda Cardoso, whose menu is adaptable, approachable, and pitch-perfect for family and friends seeking the elusive middle ground between fine-dining establishments and casual cafes. The menu is intentionally short, with only five starters and four mains, but there is something for everyone. The starters double as small plates to share, and the charcuterie and cheese platters are perfect for those looking for a light lunch.

Nanda brings skillful creativity to her menu, focusing on flavor over theatrics. The dishes are simply presented, but they will delight the senses. For the no-fuss brigade, there are delicious dishes such as lamb rump with pink peppercorn jus and hasselback potatoes. For the foodie, there are more complex plates that are reminiscent of her Chefs Warehouse background. Starters are already a favorite of locals, such as the panko prawns.

Good to know about Deux Lions

Deux Lions provides a pet-friendly environment, which means your furry friend can join you while you dine. The short kids’ menu is perfect for families with young children.

The Rise of Vaping Among South African Teenagers

Vaping is quickly becoming a popular habit among South African teenagers, drawn by sweet fruity flavors, flashy packaging, and the buzz on social media. Many teens vape to fit in with friends, feel cool and rebellious, or to escape stress and anxiety. However, what seems like harmless fun can quickly turn into addiction, affecting their health and wellbeing. Despite the risks, vaping is often misunderstood, making it harder for families and schools to stop this growing trend. It’s a serious challenge that needs everyone—parents, teachers, and leaders—to work together to protect young people’s futures.

South African Agriculture and the Changing Winds of Trade

Since 2000, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) has helped South African farmers sell fruits like avocados, wine, and citrus to the United States without paying extra taxes. This chance boosted farming communities, especially small farmers and women, by opening up new markets and encouraging growth. But recent U.S. tariffs threaten these gains, making it harder for farmers to compete and putting many livelihoods at risk. Still, South African farmers remain strong and hopeful, working hard to face these new challenges and keep their communities alive.

Ashley Oosthuizen, a young South African woman, went to Thailand chasing her dreams but ended up trapped in a nightmare. After unknowingly signing for a package with illegal drugs, she was arrested and sentenced to over 13 years in prison, despite being innocent. Her mother moved to Thailand to fight for her, sharing Ashley’s story with the world and gaining support. Even when the real criminal confessed, the Thai courts kept Ashley behind bars. Her story is a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change and the risks travelers face in foreign countries.

Shadows Along the Hennops: Three SAPS Officers Vanish and a River Gives Up Its Secrets
