Curtain falls on another successful instalment of Identikidz

The Success Story of Identikidz

Navigating the dynamic landscape of child safety measures, Identikidz stands tall as an emblem of victory and achievement. As we close this year’s project, a look back at the strides taken and milestones reached by this unique initiative reveals a narrative of outstanding growth and accomplishment.

Identikidz, an initiative steeped in the noble pursuit of child safety, has been charting an exceptional course since its launch. This season alone witnessed the tagging of over 130,000 children – a record-breaking feat in the history of the project. The initiative helped facilitate 302 reunions, the fewest in the last three years, highlighting a reduction in incidents of lost children, thereby underlining its efficacy.

Year-On-Year Progress

Identikidz has consistently been scaling greater heights year after year. A comparison of data from previous years signals an encouraging pattern. During the 2021/22 festive season, the project successfully tagged 98,232 children and spared 338 families the heartache of separation. The subsequent year witnessed an even bigger leap as an astounding 126,669 children were tagged, leading to 403 successful reunions.

The numbers from the most recent season serve as a lighthouse of hope and a testament to the project’s unwavering persistence. They added joy to the lives of 133,730 children and their families, with 302 reunions being celebrated. These statistics reinforce the unflinching commitment and grit of the Identikidz team, a group that warrants our collective admiration and gratitude.

The Team and Public Collaboration

The Identikidz team, undaunted by gruelling weather or the enormity of their task, continue to serve with steadfast dedication. Their fervour in motivating beachgoers to participate in the project is praiseworthy. The fruits of their labour and diligence materialised in the form of more than 300 children being reunited with their families, a feat that earns our profound respect.

The success of the Identikidz project is the result of not only the team’s hard work but also the public’s cooperation. Beach visitors have shown their understanding of the project’s value by having their children tagged. An amusing incident on the beaches involved a young boy asking to have his grandmother tagged after she momentarily got separated from their family, a testament to the project’s influence and continued success.

Locations of Note

Strand, a renowned beach town, once again emerged as the busiest Identikidz location. Over a span of six weekends, the team succeeded in tagging 21,536 children, leading to 67 joyous reunions. A significant event at Strand involved a five-year-old child who had strolled to the beach on his own, being reunited with his parents.

Trailing close behind were Strandfontein and Muizenberg, with 17,903 and 16,803 children tagged respectively. The reunions at these locations numbered 54 and 42, further bolstering the successful narratives of Identikidz.

Looking Forward

As this chapter of Identikidz comes to a close, it leaves in its wake a narrative of growth, accomplishment, and an enduring commitment to child safety. Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross, however, reminds us that our vigilance must outlive this chapter. As summer progresses, it’s crucial that the public stay alert during beach visits to ensure the safety of children in their care.

Identikidz, an initiative of such grand scale and significance, inspires us. It stands as proof of the might of collective resolve and effort, emphasising the importance of child safety, and serves as a beacon of hope in our battle against child separation. As we anticipate the next season, we take along the lessons learnt, the victories celebrated, and the spirit of Identikidz, prepared to embark on the next chapter in our quest for child safety.
