Early Life and Activism

Born into a working-class family, Joe Mpisi became a student activist at age 16, joining the United Democratic Front (UDF), the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM), and the African National Congress (ANC) in their fight against apartheid. He later joined the ANC and the South African Communist Party (SACP), earning leadership positions in Gauteng Province as Provincial Chairperson.

Career in the Legislature

As an MPL, Mpisi was appointed to the Portfolio Committee on Education in 2014, later chairing the Portfolio Committee on Finance before returning to Education.
