Proposed Amendments to the Informal Trading By-law in Cape Town

The city of Cape Town is suggesting changes to the Informal Trading By-law, aimed at allowing mobile businesses to operate on land owned by the city. The proposed amendments would also establish mobile business trading areas, decommission existing ones, recognise various types of mobile businesses, and issue permits. The draft Mobile Business Policy is part of an innovative approach to develop the regulation of mobile business operators and trading areas and is expected to support local economic development by using public spaces to support this emerging form of formal business activity.

Public Participation Encouraged

The city is urging the public to share their thoughts on the proposed amendments until June 22, 2023. Public participation is being encouraged to make it easier for businesses to operate in this sector on City-owned land. The proposed amendments and suggested mobile business trading areas will be presented to the Portfolio Committee, Mayoral Committee meeting and Council for consideration and approval.
