Cllr Jakeni had been serving as the Speaker of Ditsobotla Local Municipality at the time of his passing. He was elected to this position in the December 2022 bi-elections in Ditsobotla. Cllr Jakeni’s commitment to public service dates back to the 1990s when he was a prominent activist for the Congress of South African Students Organisation (COSAS).
