In this installment, we will focus on the life and career of Joel Stransky.

Joel Stransky’s Rugby Career

Joel Stransky was born on July 16, 1967, in Rondebosch. He is now 55 years old and has had an impressive rugby career. He played in 22 Tests for the Springboks, and his most memorable moment was his winning drop goal in the 1995 Rugby World Cup final against the All Blacks. Stransky became the first Springbok to score in all four possible ways during a Test in the opening match of the same tournament. He contributed a try, a conversion, four penalties, and a drop goal to guide South Africa to a 27-18 win over defending champions, Australia. Stransky had a 73% win percentage, playing on the winning side in 16 Tests and losing six. He made his Test debut against Australia in Cape Town in July 1993, and his final Test was against New Zealand at Ellis Park in August 1996.

Success Beyond Rugby

Since retiring from rugby, Stransky has found success beyond the rugby field. He ventured into the corporate world upon his return from playing and coaching at Leicester Tigers. He held senior management positions in various companies, eventually becoming a shareholder in Pivotal Capital, an investment group that owns and manages OneVault, a voice biometric company. Stransky co-founded and serves as a director at Pivotal Data, which offers facility, technology, and data solutions to call centers.

Stransky’s business acumen propelled him into the corporate sports marketing domain. He served as an executive director at Megapro, South Africa’s leading sports marketing company, where he oversaw the commercial affairs of the South African Rugby Union. Stransky also headed up hospitality at the 2003 Cricket World Cup and consulted on the Bid Book that won the rights to the 2010 FIFA Football World Cup.

Achievements in the Corporate World

Stransky’s initiatives as Director of Sales and Marketing at Altech Netstar caught the attention of the Steinhoff Group, where he assumed a management position and spearheaded the turnaround strategy for Hertz Rent-a-Car group. As a Director at Pivotal Capital/Group, Stransky played a significant role in the group’s expansion. The group now encompasses seven companies that are leaders in their respective fields. Stransky also lends his expertise to Redtree Capital, a small asset financing and rental company.

Life Outside of Business

When not working in the business world, Stransky works as a commentator and analyst for SuperSport. He has also developed a passion for cycling, completing multiple Cape Epic races.
