The Department of Police Oversight and Community Safety (POCS) held a successful Youth Day Programme on June 19th, 2023, at the Delft Civic Centre. The event aimed to empower and support the youth in Delft, addressing critical issues such as GBV and personal trauma.

Attendees

High school learners from eight different high schools within the Delft community attended the event. These schools included Delft Technical High School, Rosendal High School, Voorbrug S.S.S, Delft High School, Simunye High School, Curro High Delft, Leiden High School, and the Hague High school.

Speakers and Organizations

POCS engaged various speakers and organizations to create an impactful program for the youth. The participants were addressed by motivational speakers and guest speakers such as Mr. Reginald Maart, Community Police Forum Chairperson; Ms. Michelle Adonis, Ward Councilor for the Delft area; and Ms. Christina Nomdo, Commissioner for Children in the Western Cape. Additionally, organizations that deal with diverse social issues, such as Love Life, South African Police Service, Justice Desk Africa, and Gun Free SA, contributed to the program.

MEC Reagen Allen’s Address

MEC Reagen Allen emphasized the importance of engaging the younger generation in matters that affect their community. By doing so, the youth can be influenced to make positive choices in life. Allen pointed out that the youth confront various difficult matters daily and are expected to make certain decisions. Therefore, it is essential to provide them with opportunities for empowerment to prevent them from falling victim to gangsterism, crime, or becoming abusers themselves.

POCS Mission

The POCS remains committed to its mission of reaching out to the youth in the province through targeted interventions and strategic partnerships in communities. By partnering with South African Police Services, Municipalities, Community Policing Forums, Neighbourhood Watches, and other organizations, the department aims to create a safer society for everyone.

Investing in the Youth

The Youth Day Programme in Delft is an excellent example of how empowering the youth can lead to positive change in the community. By addressing critical issues such as GBV and personal trauma, the event provided an essential platform for young people to voice their concerns, learn from experts, and gain the necessary tools to make informed decisions in their lives. As the youth are the future of society, investing in their well-being and providing them with the support they need should be a top priority for everyone.
