The athletes of Team South Africa, who participated in the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Berlin, Germany, received a hero’s welcome upon their return home. They won an impressive 49 medals, including 22 gold, 20 silver, and seven bronze, across various sporting codes. Against 7,000 athletes from 180 nations, their triumph was a noteworthy feat, underscoring their dedication and skill.

The South African team earned their place in the World Summer Games through their exceptional performance at the 2022 Special Olympics South Africa National Summer Games in Limpopo. Over three days, these talented athletes demonstrated their skills in eight sports: athletics, aquatics, basketball, boccie, football, futsal, netball, table tennis, and ten-pin bowling. The team comprised 64 athletes and 21 coaches representing various regions across South Africa.
