In an impressive achievement, Tertuis Simmers, the Western Cape’s Provincial Minister of Infrastructure, recently handed over 24 newly built houses to qualifying beneficiaries at the Metro Grounds Development in George. The project, which had its sod turning ceremony less than nine months ago, is progressing at an exceptional pace and aims to set a precedent for future housing developments.
Emotional Handover Ceremony
During the emotional handover ceremony, many long-awaiting beneficiaries, such as 84-year-old Jacob Loggenberg, expressed their heartfelt gratitude towards the Western Cape Government. Jacob stated, “I am eternally grateful for this gift from the Lord and our Western Cape Government. I think I will need a day or two, for now, it is just unbelievable, thank you, MEC.”
Project Overview
The Metro Ground Development project aims to provide a total of 436 housing opportunities upon completion. The project is progressing rapidly, thanks to the leadership of the young site manager, Thandeka Vabaza (34). Vabaza’s role in the project exemplifies the Western Cape Government’s commitment to creating opportunities for the youth. The development has already generated 156 employment opportunities and has benefited 20 Small, Micro, and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) since its inception in October 2022.
Commitment to Empowering Beneficiaries
MEC Simmers reflected on the project’s milestones, saying, “When I tabled my budget vote for 2023/24, I made a commitment to accelerate the security of tenure. Today, we have shown that it is possible to deliver title deeds and the house keys for our beneficiaries so that they are truly empowered. We have also proven that in under 9 months, we can build and deliver houses with the right partnerships. That has been the case with the partnership of the Garden District Municipality, George Municipality, and our provincial government.”
Future Opportunities
Scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2024, the Metro Ground Development project anticipates creating even more economic and job opportunities in its upcoming phases. MEC Simmers expressed pride in the accomplishments of the young project manager, stating, “I am proud that a young project manager has shown that we can accelerate housing development under the right circumstances.”
Collaboration and Investment for the Future
The Metro Ground Development project serves as a testament to the power of effective collaboration, efficient planning, and the importance of investing in the next generation of leaders. With an emphasis on empowering beneficiaries through the simultaneous provision of house keys and title deeds, the Western Cape Government is paving the way for a more secure and prosperous future for its citizens.
