Inter Miami, a Major League Soccer (MLS) team, has welcomed Gerardo Martino, a former Barcelona and Argentina coach, as their new head coach. This move sets up an intriguing reunion with Argentine compatriot Lionel Messi.

Martino’s Appointment

Before joining Inter Miami, Martino had worked with Mexico’s national team and had also coached Atlanta United, leading them to an MLS Cup victory in 2018. Martino’s appointment was anticipated after Inter Miami dismissed their English coach Phil Neville.

The 60-year-old Martino will officially take over the team from interim coach Javier Morales once his work documentation is completed. Jorge Mas, Inter Miami’s Managing Owner, expressed his delight at Tata’s arrival, stating that Martino’s experience in coaching at the highest levels matches the club’s ambitions. He added that they are optimistic about what they can achieve together.

Reunion with Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi, who announced earlier this month that he is joining Inter Miami after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, will reunite with his former coach. Martino has a rich history with Messi, having coached him both at Barcelona and Argentina’s national team.

David Beckham’s Praise

David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami, lauded Martino as a highly respected figure in the sport, highlighting his impressive track record. Beckham expressed confidence in Martino’s ability to inspire the team and excite the fans, eagerly anticipating the impact he will have both on and off the field.

Expected Signings

Inter Miami is also expected to sign ex-Barcelona Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets, another of Martino’s former players. Mas indicated that the South Florida club could sign as many as five players during the summer transfer window.

Martino’s Coaching Career

Martino’s coaching career was built on a foundation of success. He began in Paraguay, where he guided the national team to second place in the 2011 Copa America. He then moved on to coach Newell’s Old Boys before spending a season at Barcelona in 2013-14. After a two-year stint with the Argentine national team, he joined Atlanta United in 2016.

With an impressive coaching resume and the reunion of key players, Inter Miami’s future looks bright as they aim to rise from their current standings and compete for titles under Gerardo Martino’s leadership. Martino expressed excitement at being part of a club with the necessary infrastructure to become a major competitor in the region. He believes that through hard work and commitment, they can achieve great things together.

But recent U.S. tariffs threaten these gains, making it harder for farmers to compete and putting many livelihoods at risk.
