On July 5th and 6th, 2023, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau (CoB) took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, with the theme “NAM, United and Steadfast in Confronting Emerging Challenges.” South Africa’s Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr. Alvin Botes, led the country’s delegation to the event.

Deliberations on Preparations for the NAM Heads of State and Government Summit Conference

The gathering focused on the preparations for the 19th Summit Conference of the NAM Heads of State and Government, which has been scheduled to hold from January 15th to 20th, 2024, in Kampala, Uganda. The meeting also reviewed NAM’s positions on global issues, such as development, human rights, peace and security, and the promotion and preservation of multilateralism, in keeping with the United Nations Charter and the Bandung Founding Principles.

Additionally, the NAM Ministerial Meeting of the CoB featured a session of the NAM Ministerial Committee on Palestine, of which South Africa is an active member. The committee’s role is to coordinate NAM’s activities in supporting the Palestinians’ struggle for self-determination.

The NAM Ministerial Meeting of the CoB concluded with the adoption of two significant outcome documents: the “Baku Political Declaration” and the “Political Declaration of the NAM Ministerial Committee on Palestine.”
