Cape Town has witnessed an important event this past weekend as the Junior City Council (JCC) elected new Executive Committee Members for the 2023 term. This article will cover the JCC’s role in the community, the electoral process, and the newly elected Executive Committee.
The JCC’s Role in the Community
Established under the guidance of City Speaker Alderman Felicity Purchase and supported by JCC Custodian Cllr. Donovan Nelson, the JCC has been a driving force for instilling civic responsibility among Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners in the city’s 116 wards and 21 subcouncils. This initiative has been instrumental in sharpening the skills, self-image, and leadership abilities of young individuals, ultimately preparing them to serve as proud City Ambassadors.
The Electoral Process
The previous Executive Committee concluded their term in 2022, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to the JCC’s activities and their respective communities. Outgoing members were commended for their unwavering commitment and service, setting the bar high for their successors.
In a democratic electoral process featuring campaigning and nominations from current JCC members, the newly elected Executive Committee for the 2023 term includes Junior Executive Mayor: Dirk Hagen, Junior Deputy Mayor: Fayhaa Khalil, Junior Speaker: Teagan Bender, and Junior Chief Whip: Hlumelo Jeke. The election, held at the City of Cape Town’s Municipal Council Chambers, was overseen by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to ensure a fair and transparent process.
The Newly Elected Executive Committee
As the city’s newest leaders, these individuals carry a sense of excitement and enthusiasm for their roles and responsibilities.
