The Ugu District Agriculture and Other Critical Skills Careers Expo and Economic Opportunities Exhibitions is a significant event that aims to uplift the lives of Ugu District citizens and those from surrounding areas. The event is an initiative of the Ugu District Development Model (DDM) and seeks to address the high rate of youth unemployment within the district by promoting skills development and hosting Youth Careers Exhibitions.

Background

The idea for the event was born after the Ugu District Youth Indaba held on September 22, 2022, adopted a resolution to address the high rate of youth unemployment within the district by hosting Youth Careers Exhibitions.

Partnerships

AgriSETA, the Agricultural Sector Education and Training Authority, is partnering with Deputy Minister Manamela, the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), and Ugu District Municipality to host the event. As the DDM national champion for the Ugu District, Manamela’s participation in the expo is highly anticipated.

Objectives

The expo’s primary objective is to raise awareness among learners about the various career options available to them after completing matric. Additionally, the event will expose unemployed youth from the Ugu area to the economic opportunities they could participate in to secure a better future.

Participants

A total of 1,400 intended beneficiaries, including learners from fifteen high schools and unemployed youth from the Ugu District Municipality, will attend the expo. Deputy Minister Manamela will be accompanied by Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Ms. Nokuzola Rosemary Capa, Executive Mayor of Ugu District Municipality, Cllr Sikhumbuzo Isaac Mqadi, and AgriSETA Board Chairperson, Ms. Sharon Sepeng.

Members of the media are invited to the event, which will take place at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Complex in Gamalakhe, Port Shepstone, KZN, starting at 8:30 am on July 27, 2023.
