Sarafina!, the iconic South African film, has been digitally remastered in IMAX format in a groundbreaking collaboration. This marks the first South African movie to receive this treatment. The premiere is set to take place on 8 and 10 August 2023, followed by a full commercial release in 28 cinemas across the nation on 11 August, perfectly timed during Women’s Month. The film pays tribute to the remarkable women who played pivotal roles in South Africa’s struggle for freedom.

Unparalleled Immersion at IMAX Theatres

IMAX theatres are known for providing the world’s most innovative movie-going experience. They meticulously plan, design, and position every element, ensuring unparalleled immersion when the lights dim. Through this immersive experience, the release of Sarafina! not only honors the film’s powerful female characters but also highlights the vital role women played as the backbone of the struggle for freedom in South Africa.

Celebrating the Lives of Women

Sarafina! features legendary actresses such as Miriam Makeba as Angelina, Sarafina’s mother; Whoopi Goldberg as Mary Masembuko; and Leleti Khumalo in the titular role. These strong, inspiring women showcase the indomitable spirit and sacrifices made by countless others in their quest for freedom.

Anant Singh, the film’s producer, expressed his excitement for the IMAX release: “We are thrilled to be presenting Sarafina! in South Africa in the exceptional IMAX format, which provides the ultimate motion picture experience. With powerful portrayals by Leleti Khumalo, Whoopi Goldberg, and Miriam Makeba, Sarafina! is a celebration of the lives of women and of hope. We are delighted to be releasing this new version, which includes new scenes, in celebration of women during Women’s Month.”

A Star-Studded Cast

Sarafina! received its second standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival in May, 31 years after its initial ovation when it premiered at the esteemed French Riviera film festival. The star-studded cast also includes Mbongeni Ngema, John Kani, and Somizi Mhlongo. The screenplay was penned by Mbongeni Ngema and William Nicholson, with Darrell James Roodt directing.

Release and Premieres

Videovision Entertainment, through United International Pictures South Africa, will release Sarafina! in South Africa on 11 August 2023, with the film’s stars gracing the premieres on 8 and 10 August.
