The Importance of Apprenticeships

These apprenticeships, funded by the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA), offer practical and theoretical training in select trades. Upon completion, individuals receive a nationally recognized artisan or trade qualification, allowing them to work as skilled artisans in the public or private sectors. Alderman Theresa Uys, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, praised their accomplishments by stating that their early permanent employment at the municipality will benefit their long-term career growth.

Paving the Way for the Future

The City of Cape Town offers apprenticeships in various fields, including engineering-related areas, such as diesel mechanic, electrical, and welding, as well as construction-related fields, like plumbing and carpentry. Prospective apprentices can look forward to advertisements for the next intake of apprenticeships later this year, with the programme set to commence in early 2024. To be eligible for apprenticeships at the City of Cape Town, applicants must have a Senior Certificate (Grade 12/Matric) with technical subjects, or an Engineering/Construction N3 or NCV4 qualification.

Celebrating Women’s Month

These inspiring women are paving the way for more young women to realize the potential of skilled trades careers. Their perseverance and dedication have not only led them to secure permanent positions within the City of Cape Town but have also opened doors for others to follow in their footsteps. As we celebrate Women’s Month, these achievements serve as a testament to the resilience and determination of women who dare to challenge societal norms and excel in traditionally male-dominated fields.
