The South African Police Service (SAPS) has been making significant strides in its ongoing campaign against drugs and crime with its initiative, Operation Restore. This intelligence-driven operation has effectively apprehended numerous suspects and confiscated illicit substances across various areas of the Western Cape.

Apprehension and Confiscation of Drugs

On the evening of August 17, 2023, the authorities were alerted by a concerned citizen about an establishment in Samson Crescent, Belhar, where dagga – a local term for marijuana – was being sold. The police promptly responded and conducted a thorough search of the premises, leading to the confiscation of dagga weighing approximately 1 kg, 74 dagga sachets, 46 dagga cigarettes, and 235 dagga sweats. Additionally, an unspecified amount of cash suspected to be the proceeds of the illegal trade was seized. The authorities arrested a 38-year-old individual who will face charges related to dealing in dagga.

On the same day, members of the Provincial Operation Restore received information about a woman selling drugs at a location in Ngqwagi Drive, Philippi East. They headed to the address and conducted a search, leading to the discovery of a towel hidden on top of a washing rail containing 17 units of ecstasy and 46 and a half Mandrax tablets. Consequently, a 55-year-old woman was arrested.

Apprehension and Confiscation of Illegal Firearms

In another incident, officers were conducting crime prevention patrols in Oliver Tambo Street, Cossovo informal settlement, when they encountered an illegal tavern. A search was carried out, leading to the discovery of a .22 caliber baby brown firearm, along with nine rounds of ammunition. The owner, an adult male, was subsequently arrested.

Community Participation

These arrests and confiscations are a testament to the vigilant efforts of the South African Police Service in their mission to curb drug and crime activities in the Western Cape. This success is due, in part, to the cooperation of community members who provide valuable information to the police, allowing them to take action and apprehend suspects. This collaboration between law enforcement and the public highlights the potential for meaningful change when communities work together to ensure a safer and more secure environment for all citizens.
