The Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP) is taking steps to promote a sustainable future for South Africa’s agricultural sector, which faces global challenges. Dr. Ivan Meyer, the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Agriculture, supports this initiative and emphasizes the need for collaboration and a proactive approach to ensure the sector’s success.

Embracing Opportunities for Growth and Job Creation

The Western Cape Government (WCG) has developed a Growth for Jobs Strategy to leverage every opportunity for economic growth. Dr. Meyer emphasizes the importance of negotiating with existing and potential trading partners and extending South Africa’s participation in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) beyond 2025. This will significantly contribute to export-led job creation within the agriculture sector.

BFAP’s Credible Insights and Impact on Decision-making

BFAP has been providing unique insights to the agricultural sector for the past two decades through rigorous analyses, credible databases, and integrated models. The BFAP Baseline for 2023-2032 presents a comprehensive outlook on agricultural production, consumption, prices, and trade in South Africa.

Dr. Mogale Sebopetsa, Western Cape Head of Agriculture, highlights the baseline’s importance in the Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s decision-making process. The baseline is also used as a reference point for quarterly risk analysis and assessing the impact of power outages in the agricultural and agri-processing sectors.

Addressing the Challenges and Driving Change

The BFAP Baseline for 2023-2032 highlights several significant challenges facing the sector, such as the need for a stable policy and investment environment, infrastructure development and services, well-functioning municipalities, and efficient farmer support programs.

Dr. Meyer points out that the WCG has worked diligently to establish an investor and business-friendly environment, which has inspired consumer confidence in the province. The Growth for Jobs Strategy aims to grow the Western Cape’s economy by between 4 and 6% by 2035.

Looking Toward a Brighter Future

By addressing these challenges head-on and seeking opportunities to improve the sector, South Africa can build a thriving agricultural future for generations to come. Decisive actions and collaborative efforts led by organizations such as BFAP and the WCG are vital in driving growth, creating jobs, and ensuring a sustainable future for South Africa’s agricultural sector.
