The Netball World Cup is an event that has captured the excitement of Cape Town, with the Fan Park outside the CTICC being the epicenter of activity during the tournament. This free, accessible space has welcomed an impressive 40,716 visitors since its opening on July 28, 2023, providing an unparalleled spectator experience for both ticket holders and non-ticket holders alike.

Entertainment, Food, and Sports

The Fan Park is a perfect blend of entertainment, food, and sports, drawing netball enthusiasts and families looking for a memorable outdoor experience. Visitors can enjoy a diverse range of activities that extend beyond the matches themselves.

Live Performances and Exhibitions

A highlight of the Fan Park’s offerings is the live performances by an array of local artists, showcasing the rich cultural landscape of the city. Visitors can also witness the sport’s excitement up close through exhibition netball games. The Fan Park also features a kid’s corner, food court, daily giveaways, and a beer garden, ensuring a well-rounded experience for everyone.

A Safe and Inclusive Environment

Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, emphasized the Fan Park’s purpose: “Our goal for this fan park has been to provide access for those who cannot afford tickets while also providing them with a safe environment to enjoy entertainment, games, and art for 12-hours a day.” With the Fan Park open until the tournament’s conclusion on August 6, there remains ample opportunity for more visitors to partake in this unique event.

Supporting Future Sports Talent

One of the Fan Park’s most remarkable achievements is its support for the Sporting Chance Street Netball Programme. Sponsored by the City, this initiative has contributed to the development of 760 under 13 girls from eight local communities. Some of these young athletes even won the chance to attend the Netball World Cup games, a testament to the city’s dedication to nurturing future sports talent.

A Vibrant and Inclusive Environment

The Fan Park hosted a launch concert on July 26, boasting performances by renowned artists such as Nasty C, Simmy, Goodluck, Emo Adams, DJ Grant Lesch, and Kurt Darren. This event alone attracted 5,700 people, highlighting the city’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive environment during the Netball World Cup.

Information and Tickets

Located on Walter Sisulu Drive, the Fan Park is the official viewing area for the Netball World Cup Cape Town 2023. The space operates daily from 7:00 am until the end of the last match, welcoming visitors to immerse themselves in the World Cup festivities. For those eager to learn more about the Netball World Cup Fan Park or secure tickets to the remaining games at the CTICC, the City’s website (https://www.capetown.gov.za/Explore and enjoy/Events-in-the-city/City-supported-events/netball-world-cup-2023) and the official Netball World Cup site (https://nwc2023.org.za/tickets/) offer a wealth of information.

The 7-1 Split: Revolutionizing Rugby or Skewing Fairness?

The 71 split strategy in rugby shakes things up by putting seven forwards and just one back on the bench. This bold move, introduced by coach Rassie Erasmus, aims to boost a team’s strength late in the game but has sparked fierce discussions about fairness in the sport. Some love the way it changes the game, while others worry it might hurt the spirit of rugby and put too much pressure on the backs. As teams like France and Scotland weigh in, this tactic is pushing rugby into a debate about sticking to old ways versus trying new things. Will this strategy shape the future of rugby, or will it fade away? Only time will tell!
