On a Saturday afternoon, a vigilant bystander named Brandon played a crucial role in a daring rescue that took place off the harbour wall at Kalk Bay, Cape Town. The location is notorious for posing risks during high tide and rough sea conditions. Nevertheless, Brandon’s swift actions, supported by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) duty crew, saved the lives of two men from potentially tragic consequences.

The Dramatic Rescue

At around 4:45 pm, the NSRI duty crew received alerts about two local men who were swept off the harbour wall and into the treacherous waters below. Brandon, who was nearby, bravely entered the water with an NSRI Pink Rescue Buoy to lend aid. The NSRI Simon’s Town crew launched the NSRI rescue vessel Donna Nicholas and activated various rescue organizations, including Cape Medical Response (CMR) and the City of Cape Town’s water rescue network.

Brandon’s Heroic Actions

When the rescue team arrived on the scene, they found that Brandon had already employed the NSRI pink rescue buoy to help the two men. With the assistance of bystanders, he managed to bring one of the men safely to shore. Afterward, he continued to aid the second individual, who was injured and struggling in the water. Despite the challenges posed by the injured man’s condition, Brandon used the rescue buoy to keep him afloat until further help arrived.

The Rescue Team Springs into Action

Four NSRI rescue swimmers then entered the water, supplying Brandon with a personal flotation device (PFD) and helping him keep the injured man secure on a ledge beneath the harbour pier. Once the NSRI rescue craft arrived on the scene, a crane was employed to lift the injured man, who was secured onto a specialized hoisting stretcher, onto the vessel. The casualty was then successfully transported to shore, where CMR paramedics provided medical attention. Although his condition was serious, the injured man was reported as stable and is currently on the road to recovery.

Brandon’s Admirable Selflessness

The NSRI has issued an appeal for Brandon to come forward so they can express their admiration for his selfless actions during the rescue. They have urged anyone with information about his identity to contact NSRI Communications at 082 380 3800. Brandon’s daring and altruistic efforts in the face of danger serve as a striking reminder of the power of human compassion and the importance of remaining vigilant in treacherous environments.

A Call for Caution

The NSRI implores the public to exercise caution at the Kalk Bay harbour wall, especially during high tide and rough sea conditions when powerful waves can sweep unsuspecting bystanders off the wall and into the water. By adhering to safety guidelines and respecting the power of the ocean, the people of Cape Town can continue to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of their seaside surroundings.

Brandon’s quick thinking and cooperation with the various rescue organizations saved two lives that day. His heroic actions serve as a reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant in hazardous environments and the power of human compassion. The NSRI’s appeal for Brandon to come forward is a testament to his admirable selflessness and bravery. The incident also highlights the need for people to exercise caution when visiting the Kalk Bay harbour wall.
