A New Era of Library Leadership: Celebrating South African Librarians Day

The City of Cape Town’s Library and Information Services welcomed 20 emerging leaders to the world of library leadership in honor of South African Librarians Day. These individuals participated in the Strengthening Innovative Library Leaders (SILL) training program, designed to empower library professionals to make a difference in their communities.

The SILL Program

The SILL program was adapted by the City’s Library and Information Services to address local needs with the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The training focused on improving participants’ understanding and confidence in their leadership styles, allowing them to implement innovative services and foster change in their libraries. The program emphasized group work, discussion, and personal feedback for future growth.

The Graduates

The list of librarians who completed the training includes promising talents from various libraries across the city. Each participant brought their unique perspectives and expertise to the academy. The SILL Academy’s theme, “Take the First Step,” encouraged participants to take control of their professional journeys as librarians and leaders, as well as act as mentors to others.

The Pledge

In a show of commitment to their profession, the new library leaders pledged to uphold the values of the City and their profession, vowing to “Proudly be a public librarian.”

The Praise

Councillor Patricia van der Ross, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, praised the program and its participants, highlighting their newfound abilities to take initiative, solve problems, spark innovation, communicate effectively, and understand their own leadership styles. Their commitment to implementing action plans further cements their positions as community leaders.
