On July 15, 2023, an off-duty police officer stationed at SAPS Burgersfort was brutally murdered by unknown assailants in Lebowakgomo area. However, within just eight hours, the Hawks arrested a 33-year-old suspect in connection to the crime, in an impressive display of teamwork and collaboration.
Upon receiving news of the murder, Lt General Godfrey Lebeya, National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), activated a 72-hour plan to track down the suspects. Major General Gopz Govender of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Limpopo Province assembled a multidisciplinary team of experts, which included members of various law enforcement agencies and private security firms.
Through an extensive investigation, the team traced the suspects to Braamfontein, Johannesburg, in Gauteng Province on the same day. The team spotted the suspicious vehicle with three occupants and tactically cornered them, leading to the arrest of the driver. Further investigation led the team to the suspect’s residence in Rooihuiskraal, Centurion, Pretoria, where they found a firearm believed to have been used in the murder, a Volkswagen Golf 7 GTI, a large sum of money, and a cellphone.
The swift resolution of the case within eight hours showcases the incredible power of teamwork and collaboration among various law enforcement agencies and private security firms. The united efforts of these experts made it possible to bring a dangerous criminal to justice in an impressively short amount of time, and serves as a testament to the effectiveness of multidisciplinary collaboration in solving complex and urgent cases.
