The establishment of Truworths International Limited’s distribution centre, which is expected to be the largest of its kind in the Western Cape, is generating excitement among Cape Town’s residents. The site, located at King Air Industria, close to Cape Town International Airport, is a testament to the city’s unwavering commitment to becoming the primary business hub in Africa.

The Project’s Significance

Alderman James Vos, the Mayoral Committee member for Economic Growth, recently visited the construction site and commented on the project’s importance. “This development is an indication that Cape Town is experiencing a growth in development, thanks to our mission to make it the easiest place to do business in Africa,” he explained. According to a recent FNB report, the provision of reliable services was one of the main reasons for businesses relocating to Cape Town.

The Distribution Centre

The distribution centre, a collaboration between King Air Industria, a partnership between Atterbury Property and Old Mutual Property, and Truworths, is scheduled for completion by November 2023. The facility will consist of 50,000 square metres of warehouse space and 3,000 square metres of office space, which is equivalent to the size of five and a half rugby fields.

The City’s Key Role

Building the distribution centre required a weight of 750 tonnes of steel, equivalent to 125 African elephants. Gerrit van den Berg, the Head of Western Cape Developments at Atterbury Property, expressed his appreciation for the City of Cape Town’s support and the tireless efforts of Alderman Vos and his team to grow the local economy.

Cape Town’s Historical Connection

Cape Town’s historical links to the textile and clothing industry make it an ideal location for this vast distribution centre. Alderman Vos stated that the South African industry is expected to produce 368 million garments by 2023, supporting over 60,000 manufacturing jobs. The Cape Clothing and Textile Cluster’s partnership with the City plays a critical role in promoting growth across the value chain, from retail to small and medium-sized businesses.

Initiatives by the Cape Clothing and Textile Cluster

The Business Accelerator Programme, an initiative by the Cape Clothing and Textile Cluster, has helped several small clothing and textile businesses in Cape Town secure lucrative contracts worth millions of rands in the last year. These successes demonstrate the city’s potential as a thriving hub for Africa’s textile and clothing industry.

As the Truworths distribution centre draws near to completion, it represents Cape Town’s ongoing growth and commitment to promoting a flourishing business environment. The project showcases the city’s rich history in the textile industry and highlights the potential for future development, cementing Cape Town as an ideal location for businesses to prosper.
