South African motorcycle racer Brad Binder experienced a rollercoaster of emotions at the Dutch Grand Prix, held at the historic Assen GP event last weekend. Although the KTM factory rider, known for his fierce tenacity, narrowly missed out on two podium finishes, his setbacks were the result of exceeding track limits. Binder’s bike touched the green paint at Stekkenwal, leading to two demotions to fourth place in the sprint race and the main event.

A Weekend of Impressive Performances

Despite the unfortunate turn of events, Binder showcased incredible racecraft throughout the weekend. Starting from fifth on the grid, he had a remarkable launch off the line and challenged eventual race winner Francesco Bagnaia and pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi. Among the top contenders, Frenchman Johann Zarco, Álex Márquez, and Jorge Martin also displayed impressive performances. However, six-time MotoGP champion Marc Márquez decided not to race after a crash during qualifying.

Binder’s Race and Reflections

Binder closely followed Italy’s Bagnaia throughout the race, but a mistake at the final chicane led to a loss of momentum. A second track limits penalty resulted in him finishing fourth on the final lap. Bezzecchi secured second place, with Aleix Espargaró taking third and Martin finishing fifth.

Reflecting on his performance, Binder expressed regret for his team, stating that they did an incredible job all weekend. He acknowledged the strength of his start and his ability to make the soft tire work until the end but remained apologetic for his infringements. Despite the disappointment, he chose to focus on the positives, highlighting his consistent strength throughout the weekend. Looking ahead, he vowed to make amends at the upcoming Silverstone race.

Final Results and Upcoming Races

The final results of the Dutch GP saw Italy’s Francesco Bagnaia claim victory, with Bezzecchi and Espargaró following in second and third place, respectively. Binder’s fourth-place finish earned him a total of 114 points in the 2023 MotoGP World Championship rider standings, placing him fourth overall.
