As South Africa gears up to host the BRICS Summit for the second time, the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has taken measures to ensure a safe and secure event. The summit will see Heads of States and Ministers from various nations gather in the country from August 22nd to 24th, 2023.
Comprehensive Security Plan
NATJOINTS has worked closely with priority committees, government departments, and stakeholders to develop a comprehensive security plan. The plan covers various aspects, including transportation, route, venue, accommodation, traffic control, and sea, land, and airport border security. With only four days remaining until the Summit, NATJOINTS’ preparations are on track, and all critical role players are ready to execute their respective duties.
Five-Pillar Approach
NATJOINTS has adopted a five-pillar approach to ensure maximum safety and efficiency. This approach includes intelligence gathering, analysis and coordination, proactive measures, a combat approach supported by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), reactive measures, and increased awareness and information sharing.
Increased Police Visibility
To prevent and combat opportunistic crimes before, during, and after the Summit, increased police visibility will be implemented around the conference center. Resources from all relevant government departments have been mobilized to work with various law enforcement agencies to execute and implement the security plan.
Law Enforcement Instructions
Law enforcement officers have been instructed to enforce the law at all times and at all areas of deployment, acting professionally, impartially, and with integrity. The public is advised to cooperate with officers and avoid any illegal activities. Any threats or disruptions will be dealt with decisively according to the law.
Accreditation and Access Management
To manage access to the venue and restricted areas, only individuals with proper accreditation will be allowed entry. The Civil Aviation Authority has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), restricting airspace within two nautical miles and five thousand feet above sea level surrounding the conference venue.
Traffic and Road Closures
Residents and businesses in Johannesburg are advised of limited access and road closures near the Sandton Convention Centre during the Summit. Road closures around the Midrand Gallagher Estate will be in effect on August 23, 2023.
