The City of Cape Town has launched its annual #SpringCleanCT campaign for 2023, with the goal of encouraging residents to participate in local clean-up efforts and scaling up cleaning operations in litter hotspots across the metropolitan area.

Success of Joint Efforts in 2022

Last year’s joint spring clean-up campaign between the city, residents, civil society, schools, and businesses resulted in the collection of nearly 200,000 additional bags of litter throughout Cape Town.

Mayor’s Enthusiasm and City’s Plans

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis enthusiastically announced the initiative, urging citizens to join the effort to get Cape Town’s communities, parks, streets, waterways, and beaches looking sparkling clean this spring. The city plans to expand cleaning operations city-wide, and Mayor Hill-Lewis encouraged citizens to organize clean-ups in their neighborhoods.

A significant addition to the #SpringCleanCT campaign this year is the introduction of Bingo, the city’s new anti-litter mascot. Bingo will be the centerpiece of the campaign’s efforts, with plans to promote the message of keeping Cape Town clean in schools across the city.

Commitment to the Cause

During the #SpringCleanCT launch, Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, expressed his commitment to the cause. The city is expanding cleaning efforts along major routes and littering hotspots to prepare for the busy tourism season ahead. Outreach teams will engage residents in malls, schools, intersections, and public places, with a simple message of never littering and always keeping Cape Town clean.

24-Hour Toll-Free Number and Substantial Investments

Residents can report illegal dumping tip-offs through a 24-hour toll-free number (0800 110077), which may lead to rewards in cases of arrests. The City of Cape Town is also making substantial investments in Urban Waste Management services over the next three years.

Share Your #SpringCleanCT Efforts on Social Media

Residents are encouraged to share their #SpringCleanCT efforts on social media by organizing or joining a clean-up and tagging their posts with the hashtag #SpringCleanCT.

The #SpringCleanCT campaign fosters a sense of collaboration and pride among Cape Town’s residents, entrenching the importance of cleanliness and ecological responsibility in the hearts of its citizens. Cape Town aims for a cleaner, more sustainable city, championed by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Alderman Grant Twigg.
