After 12 years, the City of Cape Town is once again awarding Civic Honours to recognize the exceptional achievements of its residents. The prestigious recognition serves to acknowledge those who have made significant contributions to Cape Town and beyond. An official ceremony will take place in December to honor the selected individuals and associations.

The Esteemed Recipients

Among the esteemed recipients are Albie Sachs, a lawyer, activist, and former Constitutional Court justice; cricket legend Basil D’Oliveira; and pop icon Brenda Fassie. Philanthropist and Gift of the Givers founder, Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman, and renowned playwright, Athol Fugard, will also be recognized for their extraordinary achievements.

Mayor’s Delight in Acknowledging Accomplishments

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis expressed delight in acknowledging the accomplishments of these extraordinary individuals and organizations during a recent City Council meeting. He emphasized the importance of periodically appreciating the contributions of those who might not have sought recognition or reward.

The residents nominated for the Civic Honours come from various backgrounds and sectors, encompassing selfless service, artistic talents, sports achievements, and fighting against the injustice of apartheid and tyranny of fascism. These individuals have not only impacted Cape Town but have touched lives all around the world.
