Cape Town is experiencing a significant growth in tourist numbers due to successful marketing campaigns, strategic advertising in densely populated regions, and inbound travel from key markets like the US and Europe. Accommodation providers and tourist attractions are getting ready for a prosperous season, and the city is making safety a top priority for the busy season.

Cape Town, the sparkling gem nestled on the southernmost tip of Africa, is currently experiencing a significant growth in its tourist numbers. This suggests a promising development for the city’s tourism sector. With the mounting influx, entities such as accommodation providers and tourist attractions in the city are getting ready for a prosperous season. They are eagerly expecting the arrival of hundreds of thousands of domestic and international tourists.

A Surge in Visitor Numbers

During October and November 2023, an observable increase in the number of visitors was reported by the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway compared to the same span in 2022. Visitor counts for the cableway were 103,465 and 107,864 for the two months, showing a significant increase from the previous year’s numbers of 82,298 and 79,374 respectively. This trend of growing visitor numbers is anticipated to persist with the forecast for December 2023 predicting around 115,000 visitors, which exceeds the 109,057 tourists from December 2022.

The exceptional upswing in tourist numbers is commendable and clearly demonstrates the fruitful outcomes of strategic marketing in densely populated regions. The city also ventured into relatively unexplored countries to stimulate the interest of potential visitors.

Successful Marketing Campaigns

A testament to this strategic approach is the advertising campaign launched in Brazil before the inauguration of flights between Sao Paulo and Cape Town. The campaign was successful in reaching 3.3 million people, exceeding the initial target of 2.8 million.

Likewise, the campaign found favor in the US market where it reached over 8.2 million people, exceeding its goal by a substantial 500%. In Europe, it received over 25 million views, surpassing its target by 3 million views. This demonstrates a calculated approach to generating demand from key markets, resulting in an increase in bookings.

Moreover, inbound travel from the US and Europe in the first quarter of 2023 superseded figures for the same period in 2019. This growth was particularly noticeable in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and the US market, with visitor numbers reaching 104%, 106%, 116%, and an impressive 155% respectively of the numbers from January to April 2019.

Airport Figures and Accommodation Forecasts

Cape Town International Airport also demonstrated a positive trend, handling 31,297 passengers, which included 9,058 international voyagers, in the first week of December. The airport also recorded an average of 240 aircraft movements per day, marking a 26% increase compared to the same period in 2019.

In addition to the optimistic data from the airport, research from Cape Town Tourism suggests that accommodation providers in the metro area are predicting a 75% occupancy rate for December. According to a survey, a hopeful 86% of Cape Town Tourism’s members anticipate a better December compared to 2022.

Partnerships and Safety Preparations

The collective efforts of the City in collaboration with Cape Town Tourism and Wesgro’s Air Access and Cruise Cape Town programmes have significantly contributed to the increase in flights and cruise ships to cater to the growing demand. As a result of these efforts, Cape Town has been recognized as the Continent’s Leading City Destination at the World Travel Awards, further underscoring its allure as a premier tourist destination.

Safety has also been a top priority for the city in preparation for the busy season. The public Emergency Communication Centre is conveniently reachable via landline or mobile in case of any emergencies. The city is also set to roll out its largest festive tourism safety operation to date, with a special assignment of Tourism Unit personnel to Table Mountain National Park and the Central Business District. This focus on safety is further bolstered by the utilization of technology like drones, dashcams, automatic number plate recognition, and CCTV.

Additional Safety Resources

Cape Town Tourism provides additional safety resources through TravelWise, a platform that offers updated safety information and practical advice. The platform also features the Namola App, a free safety response app that quickly connects users to an emergency operator and determines their location. Furthermore, the Band-Aid Programme provides support for those encountering difficulties, offering services like emergency accommodation and assistance with misplaced travel documents.

In conclusion, with intensified marketing efforts and a strong focus on safety, Cape Town is prepared to welcome a wave of tourists. As the city’s tourism sector flourishes, the benefits extend not only to local businesses but also to the visitors who get to experience the unique allure of Cape Town, often referred to as the Greatest City on Earth.
