Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, encourages residents and businesses to engage in the live-streamed summit and contribute to the future of transportation in Cape Town. The event aims to address the city’s major challenges, including the decline of rail transport, the increase in road-based transport, and the necessity for more comprehensive public transport interchanges.

According to the City’s most recent Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan (CITP), 58% of residents rely on private vehicles, while 22% use minibus-taxis and 9% take advantage of bus services like MyCiTi and GABS. Disturbingly, rail usage has seen a 95% decline between 2012 and 2022, with a mere 2% of commuters continuing to use this form of transport.

The Impact and Ramifications of Transport System Failures

The deterioration of passenger rail services and the growing dependence on road-based transportation have placed a significant burden on the city’s road infrastructure. Maintenance and congestion issues continue to escalate, and the need for more extensive public transport interchanges is also on the rise. Furthermore, the transportation of freight between cities and harbors by heavy vehicles exacerbates road damage.

These national-scale failures put a strain on the City’s budget and human resources, ultimately impacting commuters who now face higher travel expenses and increased congestion. Load-shedding, vandalism, crime, and extortion further worsen the situation, causing delays and disruptions to vital capital projects.

Engaging Conversations at the Urban Mobility Summit

The summit will feature expert-led panel discussions on topics of public interest and concern, including:

  1. Passenger Rail Reform: Tackling the need for reform, funding and operational responsibilities, and the Constitutional mandate.
  2. Prioritizing People in Transport Spaces: Investigating ways to enhance transport efficiency and spatial justice despite insufficient public transport options.
  3. Formalization and Modernization of the Minibus-Taxi Industry: Examining the challenges posed by the industry’s informal nature and leveraging smart technologies and innovation.
  4. Sustainable Mobility: Assessing the impact of environmental issues on sustainable mobility and future planning, considering Cape Town’s 10,700 km road network and congestion problems.
  5. Tackling Vandalism, Theft, and Crime: Evaluating the effect of criminal activities on commuters and the City’s efforts to provide services and capital projects in a volatile environment.
  6. Innovative Urban Solutions in a Complex Setting: Exploring creative ways to overcome load-shedding and crime while developing an integrated, intermodal public transport system.
