Calling all botany enthusiasts! The FynbosLIFE Fair is returning to Zandvlei Lookout in Muizenberg this Sunday. This day-long event is perfect for anyone looking to cure eco-anxiety and explore the rich biodiversity of the Cape Floristic Region (CFR).
Event Details
Last year’s inaugural event was a big success, and this year’s fair promises to be even better. With over sixty stands, the fair offers a carefully curated selection of nature conservation organizations and fynbos artisans. The fair aims to showcase the beauty and diversity of the Fynbos Biome, which is found only in the CFR and is globally renowned for its exceptional plant species richness and endemicity.
Importance of Fynbos
Dr. Caitlin von Witt, botanical ecologist and director of FynbosLIFE, notes that Cape Town is considered both the biodiversity and extinction capital of the world, within a buzzing CFR biodiversity hotspot. With untoward weather becoming more frequent, Dr. von Witt highlights the urgency of reassessing ecologically suitable gardens and considering indigenous fynbos as an option.
Talks and Workshops
The FynbosLIFE Fair offers much more than just educational talks. Guests can expect talks on fynbos propagation and restoration by Dr. von Witt, as well as insights into FynbosLIFE projects such as KURUfynbos, BoSSIES, FUNDAfynbos, and the retail Cape Flats Fynbos Nursery. Experts in various fields will also be giving talks, including Prof. Nox Makunga of Stellenbosch University on fynbos in medicine, Tracey Bodington of Mini Mo Shows on fynbos snakes, and Prof. Muthama Muasya of the University of Cape Town on fynbos graminoids. Additionally, environmental groups and hacking gurus will be on hand to ease eco-anxiety and inspire action by sharing information about their work.
Art and Food
Visitors can also enjoy fynbos-inspired artwork, ceramics, fabrics, and homeware. Indulge in fynbos-distilled or -infused gin and rum, as well as food featuring fynbos ingredients. Organizers Louise Baldwin and Genie Marais promise that there will be much, much more.
Fun for Children
Children can participate in environmentally themed activities with the Butterfly Art Project, NatureConnect, Sharkspotters, and more.
Music
To top it all off, local musicians and vinyl DJs from The Commons in Muizenberg will provide vibrant tunes throughout the day.
