City of Cape Town Offers Internship Opportunities to Boost Employment

The City of Cape Town is providing numerous internship and skills development programs through its internship database. The database is a source of information that offers training and development opportunities for the next year. Unemployed graduates residing in Cape Town are encouraged to register as soon as possible to increase their chances of being considered for the available opportunities.

Importance of the Internship Database

Several municipal departments within the city identify operational needs throughout the year. By maintaining a robust database of qualified graduates, the City can quickly connect potential candidates with the available opportunities when applications open.

Register for the Internship Database

Alderman Theresa Uys, the City’s MMC for corporate services, urges young graduates and those with a National Senior Certificate to register their details on the internship database. Doing so increases the likelihood of discovering opportunities that suit their qualifications.

To register on the internship database, applicants must follow a few simple steps:

  1. Register for e-Services and activate the careers service.
  2. Create an online CV, including personal details, education, training, references, and required documents (ID, cover letter, and relevant qualifications such as matric certificate, diploma, or degree).

Various Programs Available

The City’s internship and skills development programs aim to provide training and work experience that will help individuals thrive in the job market and secure permanent employment. The following programs are available for applicants to consider:

Graduate Internship Programme (GIP)

The GIP targets graduates who have completed their qualifications at an Institution of Higher Learning. To qualify, applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree or postgraduate qualification.

Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG) Programme

The ISDG program prepares graduates for the world of work and provides exposure to various fields. Applicants must be registered or eligible for registration with relevant statutory councils such as SACNASP, ECSA, SAGC, and SACPLAN.

Geographical Information Systems Programme

The program focuses on key learning areas such as data cleaning, maintenance, systems administration, data mining, preparation, analysis, spatial data analysis, presentation formulation, research, project management, and professional conduct.

Skills Programme

The Skills program offers exposure and structured practical learning opportunities. It is aimed at those with Grade 10/11 or a National Senior Certificate (Grade 12/ N1-N5/ Level 2-4) and has a quarterly intake of candidates throughout the year.

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme

The WIL program integrates academic learning with its application in the workplace, a requirement for obtaining a formal qualification. This work experience is defined by clear learning outcomes and is formally known as In-service Training.

The internship and skills development opportunities provided by the City of Cape Town present unemployed graduates with the chance to enhance their skills, gain valuable work experience, and increase their chances of securing permanent employment. By registering now and taking advantage of these programs, individuals can set themselves up for success in the competitive job market.
