In the ongoing battle against crime, the K-9 and Rural Safety Units (RSUs) in Swartland, Overstrand, and Mossel Bay are making significant progress. These units have been actively disrupting criminal activities in their respective municipalities and have recently achieved commendable successes.

Mossel Bay: K-9 Unit Makes an Impact

Despite not being officially launched yet, Mossel Bay’s K-9 unit has already proven its effectiveness in combatting crime. With the help of a local farm watch, the unit apprehended two individuals for drug possession and for being a wanted person. The K-9 unit also confiscated small amounts of various drugs and discontinued the use of three vehicles at a checkpoint.

Swartland: Neighborhood Watch Key to Arrests

The Swartland local neighborhood watch (NHW) played a crucial role in assisting the local RSUs, leading to eight arrests. These included two individuals for dealing in liquor, five for possession of drugs, and one for intimidation. The units also confiscated various illicit substances, such as mandrax tablets and tik, as well as 107 750ml bottles of beer.

Overstrand: Protecting Natural Resources

The Overstrand RSUs arrested three individuals, one for possessing tik and cocaine, another for dealing in liquor, and the third for possessing 433 sucked abalone. This last arrest highlights the importance of protecting the region’s natural resources.

MEC Reagen Allen’s Encouragement for Continued Success

MEC Reagen Allen expressed satisfaction with the ongoing successes of the safety units in rural parts of the province. He commended Mossel Bay’s K-9 unit for sharpening its teeth for more profound bites into criminal activity once officially launched. Allen emphasized the value of having local partners support in achieving the Western Cape Government’s (WCG) goal of ensuring greater safety throughout the province.
