Basil Murray, a 92-year-old man, recently completed his 100th Fish Hoek parkrun, an event that brings together individuals of all fitness levels in South Africa. Apart from promoting an active lifestyle, the parkrun community also fosters camaraderie among its participants.
Athletics has been an integral part of Murray’s life, as he excelled in rugby, cricket, and cross-country running while in school. His passion for running and remarkable endurance have been vital assets in his parkrun journey.
Murray’s dedication to fitness is exceptional, as he has volunteered at 44 parkruns and dreams of contributing to 50 more.
Although Murray’s time declined gradually during his second set of 50 parkruns, he remains positive, cherishing the progress he has made. His unwavering determination inspires the parkrun community.
Basil Murray’s life has been rich in love and faith. He and his late wife, Hester, shared an impressive 65 years of marriage and raised four children, welcoming seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Before becoming a pastor and trainer of missionaries, Basil spent most of his life as a sheep farmer in the Karoo region.
