Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts Visits Soshanguve Township Magistrates Court to Accelerate Service Delivery

Deputy Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Honourable Bernice Swarts, recently visited the Soshanguve Township Magistrates Court to oversee the construction project aimed at providing improved access to justice services for the local community. The project is expected to be completed by December 2023, bringing the court closer to the people and making it more accessible to residents of the township.

The Project and its Implementers

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) awarded the project, with a budget of over R300 million, in 2019. The project will provide accommodations for the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, enabling them to serve the community more effectively. During her visit, Deputy Minister Swarts discussed the project’s current challenges, potential solutions, and the importance of fast-tracking service delivery with the DPWI team and various stakeholders.

The Significance of the Court and Accelerating the Project’s Completion

Deputy Minister Swarts highlighted the importance of the court and emphasized the necessity of accelerating the project’s completion to meet the December 2023 deadline. She stressed the significance of the court’s location within the township, stating, “Our people need justice, and justice delayed is justice denied.”

Employment Opportunities for the Youth

In addition to its primary goal of increasing access to justice services, the project has created numerous employment opportunities for young people. The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) National Youth Service (NYS) has recruited 85 participants, at a total cost of R5,968,299.91. The program has trained participants in various trades, including Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering (bricklaying and plumbing), Mechanical Engineering (diesel and fitting & turner), and Upholstery trade at NQF Level 2 (127 credits).

The Soshanguve Township Magistrates Court project demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving access to justice services and providing valuable skills development and employment opportunities for the youth. By working closely with the DPWI and other stakeholders, Deputy Minister Swarts hopes to ensure the project’s successful and timely completion, ultimately benefiting the local community and contributing to a more just and equitable society.
