DJ Maphorisa, a renowned South African DJ, producer, singer, and songwriter, found himself at the center of controversy after allegations surfaced that he had assaulted his girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo. This highly publicized incident has stirred up heated debate on social media, drawing attention to their relationship history and Maphorisa’s rise to fame.

DJ Maphorisa’s Rise to Fame

Born Themba Sekowe in 1987, DJ Maphorisa has achieved great success in the music industry, working with distinguished artists such as Wizkid, Drake, and Major Lazer. He first gained fame after producing popular singles for multi-genre artists like Kwesta, Busiswa, and Shekinah. Maphorisa’s innovative and versatile production style quickly garnered him attention within the South African music scene, earning him a reputation as an influential figure.

Establishing His Own Record Label

Maphorisa’s career took a significant leap when he signed with Kalawa Jazmee Records, one of South Africa’s leading independent record labels. Despite achieving considerable success with the label, Maphorisa eventually decided to establish his own record label, BlaqBoy Music. This move signaled his desire to control his artistic direction and further solidified his status as a heavyweight in the music industry.

Controversial Relationship with Thuli Phongolo

The allegations of assault raised many eyebrows, especially as Thuli Phongolo had previously denied being in a relationship with Maphorisa. The news sparked heated debates on social media, with some users calling for “cancel culture” and others demanding to hear Maphorisa’s side of the story. An industry source added fuel to the fire, claiming that this was not the first time the couple had argued.

Court Proceedings

Despite the allegations, it was revealed in court that Thuli Phongolo had filed a withdrawal statement. Magistrate Clement Mukhodobwane granted Maphorisa bail under the condition that he not communicate with Phongolo, directly or indirectly, citing her withdrawal statement. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed that Phongolo supported Maphorisa’s bail request and added that he would now lodge representations with the NPA.

Unclear Relationship Status

Although the details surrounding their relationship remain unclear, Maphorisa and Phongolo were rumored to be dating in 2021. However, they chose to keep their relationship status private. Following the recent incident, Maphorisa’s case has been postponed to 14 June for further investigation.

The DJ Maphorisa and Thuli Phongolo situation highlights the complexities of celebrity relationships and the scrutiny they face in the public eye. The impact of social media on the public’s perception of such matters further complicates the situation, as it exposes celebrities to both support and backlash from fans and critics alike. As the case continues to unfold, many questions still remain unanswered, and it remains to be seen what the ultimate outcome of this high-profile case will be.
