The Department of Employment and Labour has launched a series of campaigns leading up to the 9th District Development Model Presidential Imbizo in an effort to support and improve the lives of the residents of Chris Hani District Municipality. The campaign will run from 1st to 10th August 2023 and aims to bring essential services closer to the people while promoting awareness about key labour programmes and services.

Essential Services for Community Members

The services being provided throughout the campaign include registration of unemployed truck drivers and other work seekers, handling Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) claims and inquiries, Compensation Fund (CF) claims and inquiries, and addressing labour complaints related to the National Minimum Wage and other basic conditions. The overall aim is to empower the community members by providing easy access to essential services and information.

Inspection Blitz for Labour Law Compliance

To ensure that businesses comply with labour laws, an integrated inspection blitz will be carried out in the Wholesale, Retail, Hospitality, and Community sectors in Chris Hani District. This operation will involve a collaboration between Labour Inspectors and law enforcement agencies such as Immigration Officers from the Department of Home Affairs, South African Police Services (SAPS), and Environmental Health Practitioners from the Chris Hani District Municipality.

The main goals of the inspection are to guarantee adherence to the National Minimum Wage Act (NMWA), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Employment Equity Act (EEA), Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA), and Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA). Additionally, the inspectors will be responsible for registering work seekers, including truck drivers, in the Employment Services of South Africa (ESSA) database.

Accessing Services

To access these services, clients should bring their South African Barcoded Identity Document or Smart Card and their driving licence. The build-up campaign will take place at various venues across Chris Hani District, following a planned schedule that covers different areas each day.

Presidential Imbizo and Community Engagement

The Presidential Imbizo, a community engagement initiative led by the South African Presidency, serves as a platform for dialogue between government officials and citizens. This event encourages open discussions on critical issues affecting the community and promotes collaboration between all stakeholders to find effective solutions. The Employment and Labour’s campaign leading up to the Imbizo demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing unemployment, providing much-needed services, and empowering the citizens of Chris Hani District Municipality.

In conclusion, the build-up campaign towards the Presidential Imbizo is an essential step in connecting communities with crucial services and programmes, fostering a better understanding of labour laws and regulations, and empowering citizens to improve their lives. By working together with various government departments and local authorities, the Department of Employment and Labour seeks to make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of the residents of Chris Hani District Municipality.
