Empowering Women through Extended Public Works Programme in Cape Town

The Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) has been instrumental in empowering women in the city of Cape Town. Over the last five financial years, from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2023, 117,432 women have benefited from short-term employment and skills development through the EPWP. This program provides critical support to job seekers who have been unsuccessful in finding formal employment.

Success Story of Nontathu Dlephu

One of the significant success stories of the EPWP is Nontathu Dlephu, who transitioned from a temporary EPWP participant to a permanent staff member in the Water and Sanitation Directorate. Dlephu attributes her success to the program that provided her with the necessary work experience to identify her strengths and weaknesses, ultimately leading to her current position in the City of Cape Town.

Impact of EPWP on Women

The EPWP has been a valuable initiative in providing short-term employment opportunities to unemployed participants, particularly women. The program enables women to earn an income and develop new skills in various sectors, making them more marketable for further employment. The City of Cape Town plans to refine its efforts to transfer skills to the beneficiaries of the program, making them capable of flourishing in the city’s expanding economy.

Registration for Future Opportunities

Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, encourages unemployed residents, particularly women, to register with the Jobseekers Database to be considered for future short-term employment opportunities. Registration is free and can be done at local Subcouncils by providing a copy of one’s CV and ID document or a valid South African work permit.

The EPWP serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the value of empowering women through skill development and employment opportunities. The City of Cape Town remains committed to empowering women by equipping them with the tools they need to excel in the city’s dynamic economy.
