Empowering Woolgrowers: Eastern Cape’s DRDAR Supports Local Farmers with a Shearing Shed

The Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) is committed to promoting the commercialization of communal and emerging farmers. As part of this mission, the DRDAR recently handed over a fully equipped shearing shed to the Ubunye Farmers Association in Gqogqorha village, Tsomo. This investment in the R1.2 million facility empowers 24 woolgrowers – comprising eight women and 16 men – to improve the quality of their wool and access commercial markets.

Improving Wool Quality and Production

The Gqogqorha Shearing Shed features a sheep holding area, filling and catching pens, and other modern amenities. This upgrade is a significant improvement over the old house the Ubunye Farmers Association had been using since 2011. The shearing shed is a crucial step in enhancing the quality of wool produced by the association and promoting the commercialization of wool production.

The Ubunye Farmers Association has expanded significantly since its formation, increasing its flock from 420 animals to an impressive 2,800 sheep. DRDAR’s support has been instrumental in the association’s success, from providing infrastructure and training in small stock production, animal diseases, sheep shearing, and wool sorting, to assisting in the registration of the enterprise.

Strong Market Relationships and Income Generation

The Ubunye Farmers Association has developed strong market relationships with BKB and NWGA and produced 35 bales of wool, generating an income of R336,760 during the 2022 shearing season. This achievement is a testament to the association’s hard work, combined with the strategic support provided by DRDAR.

Commitment to Upholding Emerging Farmers

On August 18, 2023, the Gqogqorha Shearing Shed’s grand handover ceremony exemplified the DRDAR’s commitment to uplifting emerging farmers. By providing practical support, including infrastructure and training, the department empowers these farmers to realize their full potential and contribute to the region’s economic growth.
