The Department of Employment and Labour in the North West, in collaboration with the National Youth Development Agency, Harambee, SA Youth, Youth Employment, and the Government of the North West Province, hosted a Youth Employment Roadshow initiative at Ratlou Local Municipality on June 2, 2023. The event aimed to tackle unemployment and empower the youth by offering a range of services to the young and unemployed.

Large Turnout at Setlagole Thusong Centre

The Setlagole Thusong Centre witnessed a large turnout of attendees who could access government services conveniently. Silindile Nkiwane, Public Employment Services (PES) Director in the North West, highlighted that the Department was providing assistance through various programs such as Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) claims, employment counseling, registration of employment seekers on Employment Services of South Africa (ESSA), and Compensation Fund (CF) inquiries and claims.

Encouraging Young People to Take Control of Their Lives

During her presentation, Ms. Nkiwane urged young people in attendance to take control of their lives and become game changers. She emphasized the importance of using the knowledge and resources available to capacitate themselves and make themselves compatible.

ESSA Program

The Youth Roadshow has been traveling to various parts of the country, including the Free State and Limpopo since last year (2022). This government-partnered initiative has witnessed numerous young people coming forward as direct beneficiaries of the Department of Employment and Labour’s ESSA program during the Youth Roadshows.

Employers and work seekers can register on the online portal found on the department’s website, www.labour.gov.za, or visit any of the Department’s offices for assistance. ESSA is available to all South African citizens at no cost.

Empowering Youth and Breaking the Cycle of Unemployment and Poverty

The joint Youth Employment Roadshow initiative not only provided valuable information and resources but also served as an inspiration to young people in the North West province. By bringing government services and resources closer to the people, the initiative aimed to empower the youth and help them take control of their lives, breaking the cycle of unemployment and poverty.

Importance of Collaboration and Partnerships

The event underscored the importance of interdepartmental collaboration and public-private partnerships in addressing pressing issues such as unemployment. The success of the Youth Employment Roadshow initiative in the North West is a testament to the power of such collaborations in bringing about meaningful change to the lives of many young South Africans.
