Essential Water Supply Maintenance to Occur from 18th to 22nd July

The Water and Sanitation Directorate of the City will perform essential maintenance work on the water supply infrastructure. The maintenance work will take place from 18th to 22nd July 2023. This necessary operation aims to enhance the city’s water supply system, bringing benefits to the residents.

Disruptions to Water Supply

Due to pipe and valve installations, repairs, and replacements, there will be disruptions to the water supply. The most significant maintenance activity during this period will be the [Blackheath Water Treatment Plant](https://capetown.today/oversight-visit-by-north-west-provincial-legislature-to-mmabatho-wastewater-treatment-plant) shutdown. The closure will start on Tuesday, 18th July 2023, at 06:00 and end on Saturday, 22nd July 2023, at 06:00. Although the water supply will be rerouted to cover the plant’s supply areas, residents throughout the town are encouraged to use water sparingly to avoid unnecessary strain on the system. Stellenbosch municipality has been informed to take appropriate action.

Additional Maintenance Work

Bellville CBD, Triangle Farm, Bellville South, Labiance, Greenlands, Glenhaven, and Stikland will also experience maintenance work. The main water supply to these areas will be shut off from 18:00 on Wednesday, 19th July 2023, until 04:30 on Thursday, 20th July 2023. This interruption will enable the maintenance team to replace and repair control valves on the pipeline safely.

Points to Note

Residents should keep in mind the following points concerning large-scale planned water supply disruptions:

  • The maintenance work has been scheduled carefully to minimize disruption to the water supply.
  • All water and sanitation repair and upgrade sites are considered construction zones, and public access is prohibited.
  • Maintenance work may cause delays in some cases, as it may prove more complex than initially expected.
  • Following the restoration of water supply, water may appear discolored or milky due to trapped air in the pipes. This issue resolves once the water stands in a glass for a short period.

Updates and Preparation

For updates on maintenance work, including the location of water tankers if needed, residents should follow the City of Cape Town’s Twitter account: @CityofCTAlerts.

Residents are advised to prepare for planned water supply disruptions by following these guidelines:

  • Keep taps closed to prevent water loss or damage when the water supply is restored.
  • Store sufficient water in clean, sealed containers for use throughout the disruption.

By staying informed and following these guidelines, residents can minimize the impact of essential water supply maintenance work on their daily lives.
